She was born on Dec. 6, 1922, in Sidney, N.Y., a daughter of Augustus and Effie Mae Ekerson Shofkom.
Betty spent her early years in Sidney, graduating from Sidney High School in 1942. She later lived in Minoa for many years, Mattydale and Cicero, moving to Canastota in 1968 where she lived for close to 40 years, before moving back to Mattydale.
Betty had worked at Price Chopper in DeWitt, and she especially loved working at Teeth, Inc., in Syracuse, for her son-in-law, Bob, and with her longtime friend, Beverly. She loved her family, and all animals, including her many pets over the years, especially her beloved dog, Marty.
Betty was predeceased by her husband, Donald P. Avery, who died in 1981. Betty was, also, predeceased by a son, Steven M. Avery, who, also, died in 1981; and by her longtime companion, David Taber.
Survivors: her five children, Linda and Robert Smart of Mattydale, Donna Garvey and her fiance, James Joseph of North Syracuse, Daniel and Chris Avery of Canastota, John Avery of Albany, and Sandra Avery of Tallahassee, FL; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a niece.
