Vera Daavettila, 97, of Laurium, passed away Thursday, October 5, 2000, at the Portage Health System in Hancock, MI.
She was born on March 23, 1903, in Humboldt, MI, a daughter of the late Thomas and Liisa (Finni) Ulvinen and attended the local schools. Vera was united in marriage to Hugo Daavettila on August 18, 1928 in Waukegan, IL and the couple resided in Zion, IL for 44 years until moving to Laurium in 1971. Her husband, Hugo, died on August 16, 1990.
Vera was a member of the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet.
Also preceding her in death were 4 sisters, Saima Jackola, Julia Lytikainen, Helen Huotari, Ruth Filipowicz and 3 brothers, Paul, Gustaa and Jalmer.
Surviving are 3 sons, Paul (Verna) of Brighton, MI, Donald (Charlotte) of Houghton, MI, Carl (Mary Jean) of Zion, IL; 6 daughters, Audrey Virginia (Thomas) Heinonen of Trenary, MI, Helen Pietila of New Hudson, MI, Carolyn Jurmu of Laurium, MI, Ruth Davison of Seattle, WA, Dorothy (Leonard) Stang of Winthrop Harbor, IL, Susan (Paul) Wittenburg of Seattle, WA; 3 sisters, Martha Sturos of Laurium, MI, Mariam Hoover of Glencoe, IL, Vienna Leppen of Waukegan, IL; 85 grandchildren; 315 grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral service for Mrs. Daavettila will be held Monday at 11AM in the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet with Rev. Richard Eskola officiating. Interment will be in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet. Friends may call from 12-5PM, Sunday in the Apostolic Lutheran Church in Houghton at 601 Sharon Ave. and one hour prior to the service at Church in Calumet. The PETERSON FUNERAL HOME in Calumet is assisting the family with arrangements.
