VALDOSTA -- George Lathrop Barnaskey, 83, USAF Major Retired, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004. He was born March 22, 1920, in McLean, N.Y. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II and the Vietnam War. He was an Air Force pilot, and a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the veterans of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American vets. A survivor of fifty B-25 bomber missions in New Guinea during WWII, he was a pilot with the 5th Air Force Air Apaches of the 345th Bomb Group, 408th squadron. He was a T-41 flight instructor for Moody AFB, in the late 60's and early 70's, and was also employed by Saft Industries. A resident of Valdosta since 1968, George was an active member of the First Freewill Baptist church and a Red Cross volunteer at Moody AFB. He is survived by his wife, Ruth "Kizzie," sons, Edward C. Barnaskey of Seneca, SC, Frank Harrell of Altamonte springs, Fla., Albert cook of Valdosta, Jimmy cook of Jasper, Fla.; daughters, Sherry Herman, Las Vegas, Nev., Linda Harrell Guyot, Cottonwood, AL., Vern Clark and Dean Hewitt of Valdosta, Chris Becker of Poquoson, VA; and a sister, Florence Staebler of Deer park, N.Y.; and 2 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, in the Valdosta Chapel of Music Funeral services with burial following in Riverview Memorial Gardens where he will receive full military honors. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the First Freewill Baptist church, 2400 N. Forrest St., Valdosta, GA 31602.
