Arthur Forrester Devereux
Birth: Apr. 27, 1838
Death: Feb. 14, 1906

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A Harvard graduate, he was Colonel and commander of the 19th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, who, along with the 42nd New York Volunteer Infantry, is credited with meeting the "high tide" of the Confederacy at Gettysburg and halting Armistead's breakthrough at the Union center. According to reports by Army of the Potomac II Corps commander Major General Winfield S. Hancock, Colonel Devereux, seeing Confederate Brigadier General Lewis Armistead's troops come over the low stone wall appealed to Hancock, "They have broken through; the colors are coming over the stone wall! Let me in there!" To which Hancock replied, "Go in there pretty quick!" The crush of Union reserves overwhelmed the Confederates after vicious, unorganized hand-to-hand combat. He resigned from the army on February 27, 1864, and was breveted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant services during the war". In 1878, he moved to Cincinnati where where he died at age sixty-eight. He married socialite Clara Anna Rich, who originated Cincinnati's "Blue Book", or society list, and was society editor of the Cincinnati Enquirer. A memorial plaque to General Devereux is affixed to his family's tomb in Broad Street Cemetery in Salem, Massachusetts. (bio by: Bob on Gallows Hill)
