FUNERAL OF W. A. GENTRY
The remains of W. A. Gentry were received in Rockdale last Thursday morning, and the funeral was conducted that afternoon from the residence of Mayor H. C. Meyer, Rev. W. E. Copeland conducting the religious services. The interment followed at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, the pall bearers being as follows: Branch Lewis, Conn R. Isaacs, A. P. Perry Jr., John H. Bonds, J. H. Hill and Ben Loewenstein Jr.
Decedent was born in Johnson county, Ark., Sept. 4, 1849, and died at his home in Kingsville, Texas, Jan. 22, 1918. His father was W. H. Gentry and his mother Miss Nancy M. Hays [Gentry]. One sister survives him -- Mrs. Mattie Hutchins, of Guy, N.M.
He came from Arkansas to Texas with his father's family in 1857. They located near Goliad where his father engaged in cattle raising. He attended school at Concrete College, Cuero, Texas, for a number of years. In 1875 the family moved to Salina, Kan. He was married to Miss Kate Stribling at Tyler, Texas, Nov. 5, 1879. Two years later he moved back to Texas, locating at Palestine in 1882, and in 1883 he came to Rockdale continuing to make his home here until 1905, at which time he removed with his family to Kingsville.
Mr. Gentry was highly esteemed as a citizen during his residence in Rockdale, and much regret was expressed at his demise. He was a member of the Baptist church, and at the time of his death was a deacon in the Kingsville church.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Kate Gentry; one son, Bruce Gentry of Rockdale; three daughters, as follows: Mrs. H. C. Meyer, Rockdale, Mrs. J. L. Tally, Kingsville; Mrs. C. House, Kingsville. "The Rockdale Reporter," Rockdale, Texas, January 31, 1918.
