Birth: Apr. 11, 1870
Travis County
Texas, USA
Death: Dec., 1982
Wagoner County
Oklahoma, USA

Funeral services for John Henry Grant, 112, were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Hersman Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Walter Brown officiating. Burial was in Sandtown Cemetery.
The retired farmer was born, April 11, 1870, in Austin, Texas, not long after the Civil War. He was the son of Nathan and Rosie Grant. He died in December 1982. He moved to Oklahoma in 1920. The Centenarian worked as a farmer all his life. He farmed in Texas until moving to Tullahassee, near Muskogee.
County election officials believed Mr. Grant to be the oldest registered voter in the state. He cast his first vote for a U. S. president in 1896. Wagoner mayor Kenneth Peters in 1981 issued a proclamation designating Mr. Grant's birthday as John Grant Day. According to the Mayor's proclamation, Mr. Grant came to Wagoner County "in 1920 and farmed near Sand Town" until a few years ago when he retired and moved to town. John attended only three days of school during his life but reads well, an accomplishment he attributes to his "faith in God and hard work."
He was once quoted as saying; "They told me money growed on trees in Oklahoma, and in a way, it did." He said this made him decide to move from Texas to Oklahoma.
Survivors include two sons; Augusta Grant of Russellville, Arkansas, and John Henry Grant, Jr. of La Jolla, California; and two daughters, Mrs. John (Connie) Beavers, of Tulsa, and Mrs. L. D. (Anna) Ponds, of Wagoner; 34 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren. Pallbearers included great-grandsons, Calvin Ratliff, Wayne Ratliff, Robert Jackson II, Reggie Reynolds, Victor Clemons and Vernon Winters.
