"His unit repaired materials that had been shot up by the enemy. They fixed everything from watches to cannons. The army would take and send men into a pool and assign to different branches of the army and Orval would go down and get men for his unit. They did a lot of things including cooking meals. He had a lot of officers eating in his unit because they could get better food. They even had a chef from the Waldorf Astoria in his unit. He had a bunch of men out of the Oklahoma oil fields and they were great on fixing big machinery. He would get these guys to join up with him doing things they liked to do."
