Washington was a son of Clayton and Isabella Smith. He enlisted in 1862 at Pawley's Island, SC and was in Company F, 7th SC Cavalry. He was captured just before the end of the war and imprisoned for about 7 days.
He married Mary A. Skipper in Horry County, SC in 1866. They moved to Florida in 1888. A July 1911 letter said he was sent to the asylum for the insane.
