| Birth: | unknown, Egypt | | Death: | unknown, Egypt | Egyptian Pharaoh. He was the first pharaoh of Egypt's Eleventh Dynasty, and ruled for approximately sixteen years towards the end of the First Intermediate Period until his death in 2118 BC. When he first came to the throne his authority extended only as far as the area immediately surrounding the capital and was disputed by other local rulers, but by the time of his death he had won control of Koptos, Dendera and Hierakonopolis and defeated his main rival, Ankhtifi, thus beginning the process of reunifying Egypt. He was also the first king of this period to use the title of Pharaoh, and his Horus name, Sehertawy, means "He Who Has Brought Calm to the Two Lands" (meaning Upper and Lower Egypt). (bio by: js)
