Dr. Robert Godfrey Welch April 25, 1931 ~ March 16, 2004 Robert Godfrey Welch died Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at the University of Utah Medical Center from complications following surgery. Born August 25, 1931, Robert was the son of Charles F. and Cora Brew Godfrey Welch and was raised in Cowley.

Robert married his sweetheart Arlene Lynn September 22, 1953, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He received both his bachelor and master degrees from the University of Wyoming and a Ph.D. from Oregon State University.

Robert taught economics at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, for 34 years. He received various awards and recognition for his service at MSU and influenced many because of his integrity, kindness, and gentleness.

Robert and Arlene moved to American Fork, Utah, in 2001 and enjoyed the association of their dear family and friends. Mr. Welch was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and touched many lives through his service within the church, including many years as bishop of the Wichita Falls Ward.

Robert will be greatly missed by his devoted wife of 50 years, Arlene Lynn Welch, and his children, Ray and Lorri Newitt of Phoenix, Ariz., Ross and Pam Welch of Alpine, Utah, and Reed and Jennifer Welch of Amarillo, Texas. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Christian and Laura Newitt, Julie and Matt Welly, Craig, Kyle Newitt, Erin, Robbie, Daniel, Steven, Michael Welch, and Regan, Emily, Will, Lindsey and Nathan Welch; two great-grandchildren, Tate Newitt and Austin Welly; his father, Charles of Lovell; his sisters, Gae (Leon) Asay of Lovell, Carol Baston of Cowley, Terry (Jerry) Brown of St. George, Utah, and Verna Vee (Roy) Tew of Orem, Utah. Robert was preceded in death by his mother, Cora; his son, Robert; and his sister, Emily Reiman. F

Funeral services were held Friday, March 19, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. at the Manila 7th Ward building in American Fork, Utah. Burial was held Saturday, March 20, in the Cowley Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Robert G. Welch Economic Scholarship Fund at Midwestern State University, 3410 Taft Blvd, Wichita Falls, TX 76308. Funeral arrangements were conducted under the direction of Warenski Funeral Home in American Fork, Utah.
