In November 1882 Joseph joined John D. Cameron in being the first doctors in the city to care for the employees of the Chapin Iron Ore Mine & their families. The miners had $1 deducted from their monthly pay for medical care which covered all medicines & doctor's care. These 2 doctors had approximately 300 miners under their care when they began their practice. This number increased to 3,4000 in 1890. In that same year the Chapin Hospital, which in effect was more of an office than a hospital, was built at the northeast end of the present Chapin Pit where Park Avenue turns toward the north side. (taken from the book "Born from Iron: Iron Mountain, Michigan 1879-1979" where more of this history can be found).
