James left during the famine and arrived in the US in 1846. He worked as a laborer for the Great Western (later Wabash) Railroad. He was married to Hanora (Ann) Kief from 1858 until his death.
Their children were: James, Bridget, Mary, John, Charles, William, Catherine and Nancy. James, Bridget and Mary all died as children (within days of one another) from scarlet fever.
