Reynold Forrest Johnson, 97, passed away Friday, February 14, 2003, at a local care center in Boise.
Reynold lived a very full life devoted to his faith, his family and his work. Born in Brigham City, Utah, November 20, 1905, Reynold was the first of seven children born to Aurelius Elias Johnson and Hattie Vere Forrest. His childhood and youth were spent in Brigham City.
After graduating from high school, Reynold, spent a few years working various jobs before joining the Navy in 1927. After serving in the Navy for four years, Reynold studied for two years at Weber Junior College to obtain a teaching certificate. He taught school in Kelton and Brigham City, Utah, and also served in the National Guard.
In 1935 he started his career in aviation communications as an operator in Columbus, New Mexico. It was there he met Betty Lorraine Starling, Reynold's first wife, and the mother of his son Kent. They married in 1936 and eventually moved to Salt Lake City, Utah.
After the outbreak of World War II Reynold was called up to serve in the Army Air Corps. He served in England as a member of the 91st Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force, achieving the rank of Major as a group communications officer. After the war, Reynold returned to his career in aviation communications working for the Federal Aviation Agency in Douglas, Arizona. He accepted a transfer to Boise in 1954 as Chief Airways District Supervisor. Sadly, before the transfer took place, Lorraine passed away. The remainder of Reynold's career with the FAA was spent in Boise and in 1969 he retired as Chief of the Boise Airway Facilities Sector.
In 1957, he married Lucile Curtis Braithwaite, who had two daughters, Joan and Sydnie, from her first marriage. A year later, Reynold's second son George was born.
Reynold and Lucile spent 45 wonderful years together in Boise raising their children, serving in their church, gardening, enjoying their grand children and spending time at their cabin in Cascade. He was an active member of the Boise 6th Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for nearly 50 years where he served in many capacities including the bishopric, high priest group leadership and the German name extraction program. The family would like to express special gratitude to the many caregivers from TLC who cared for Reynold and Lucile in their home over the past six years.
Reynold is survived by his sons R. Kent Johnson and George (Caralee) Johnson, his step daughters Sydnie Braithwaite and Joan (Al) Panas, all of Boise; his sister Florence J. Petersen of Brigham City, Utah, and his brother James F. Johnson of Ajijic, Jal., Mexico.
Reynold and Lucile have nine grandchildren. Reynold was preceded in death by his parents, his first and second wives, two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00am Friday, February 21st, at the LDS Chapel on Broadway in Boise.
A viewing will be held Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8:00pm at the Relyea Funeral Chapel. Reynold's burial will be at the Brigham City Cemetery in Brigham City Utah. A graveside service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, February 22nd. Services are under the direction of the Relyea Funeral Chapel, Boise
