Romana H. Miller Riley
Birth: Jul. 14, 1873
Richmond County
Georgia, USA
Death: Apr. 3, 1963
Chapel Hill
Orange County
North Carolina, USA

Never married, Miss Romana H. Miller Riley was born July 14, 1873 in Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia. "Miss Romana" was a famous educator, devoting her life to the public schools of Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia, introducing a free lunch program for students during the Great Depression. Waters Avenue School in Savannah was renamed Romana Riley School in her honor. She was the co-author of "Have the Public Schools 'Had It'?" After her first retirement, she accepted a position as principal of the Independent Presbyterian Church School in Savannah during the time her great-nephews Bobby and Mikey Neely and great-niece Sharlotte Neely Donnelly were kindergarteners there. After her second retirement, she tutored students in her home which she shared with her half sister, Miss Georgia Riley (buried at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah). Her tombstone bears a quotation from the Bible's Book of Daniel (12:3): "And they that be teachers shall shine with the brightness of the firmament." She was 89 when she died on April 3, 1963 while living with her niece, "Little Romagna," Romagna Gallaway Mackie, in Chapel Hill, Orange County, North Carolina. She was one of two daughters of John Miller and Eliza Englert Miller Riley and the step-daughter of George M. D. Riley. She had six younger half-siblings. She is buried in the Gallaway family plot near her full sister, Valesca "Vallie" Adeline Miller Riley Gallaway, in Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah. Her heritage was German.
