From "Scrips and Scraps," abstracts from six old family scrapbooks:

"Died. Tuesday evening, September 29th, 1863, at his home near Johnstown, Pa., Moses Canan, aged 79 years, 6 months and 28 days.

Born on first of March 1784, in Huntingdon co., Pa.

At age of 12 he entered a Latin School in Huntingdon and at 16 he entered Dickenson College, Carlisle, then under presidency of Dr. Nesbit. Four years there then law office of Judge Rawle of Philadelphia where he remained three years. In 1807 admitted to Bar and on 8th of September of the same year was united in marriage to Mary Henderson, daughter of William and Margaret Henderson, of Huntingdon, Pa. Strong love of military life and in 1812 raised a company of Volunteers in Alexandria, Pa., and entered service of his country and spent his time during war in Niagara Frontier. In May 1818 moved to Cambria County and elected Major of a battalion of Volunteers. Among earliest settlers and first lawyers in the county. In 1837 moved to Johnstown where he has since resided. In 1838 united with Presbyterian church then under care of Rev. S. H. Terry... elected and ordained elder... until his death.

Wife, Mary Canan, died December 1833, aged 49; and on 6th of January 1845, was united with Elizabeth Rudesill, daughter of Frederick and Catharine Sharretts, who still survives him..."

Some have said he was a Major and his Veteran's burial card says Private but this says:
