Samuel W. Greenland, retired vice president and general manager of the St.
Louis Public Service Co., died yesterday following a heart attack at his
home in Lakeland, Fla. He was 81 years old. Mr. Greenland came to St. Louis
in 1924 as a member of the reorganization committee of the old United
Railways Co., and was named vice president of St. Louis Public Service Co.
when it was organized in 1927. He served as general manager during the
company's receivership under the late Henry W. Kiel from 1933 to 1939, and
in 1939 was elected vice president and general manager. He continued in this
post until his retirement in 1948. Born in Clarion, Pa., Mr. Greenland
attended Pennsylvania Military College and Pennsylvania State University.
He began his transit career with the Harrisburg (Pa.) Railways Co. in 1907,
and worked for utilities in Mississippi and Indiana before coming to St.
Louis. He was a past president of the board of the metropolitan Y.M.C.A.
here, a life member of the Municipal Opera board and a past president of the
American Transit Association.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Wilson Greenland; two daughters, Mrs. John
C. Keyes, New Braunfels, Tex., and Mrs. J. Wilson Shaver, Darien, Conn.; a
son, Samuel Greenland Jr. of St. Louis and a brother J. Allan Greenland of
Indianapolis, Ind. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow in
Lakeland, with burial in Clarion.
