Although his gravestone is inscribed with the birth year of 1872, according to family records, Frederick Oscar, always known as Fred, was born 26 May 1873 in Yankton. He was the oldest child of Godfrey "Fred" Donaldson and his wife, Hilda Nyberg Donaldson. Fred grew up the son of a business man and at an early age he worked as a clerk at the family store. For most of his life he lived with his parents in Yankton, the exception being a period during World War I when his draft card indicates he was living in Seattle, WA. Fred, who never married, did odd jobs around the community where everyone knew him. He died 18 Feb 1937 in Yankton and was buried with his family in Yankton City Cemetery.
