Anoka County Union
Feb. 27, 1907

John Whitney, a well known citizen, died Saturday afternoon at his home on North Street, after an illness of nine weeks of Bright's disease and rheumatism of the heart. He was born in Corinth, Penobscot County, Maine, March 12, 1830. He enlisted in the army in 1862, at Cambridge, Minn. After the war was over, he came back to Anoka to live and was employed by the W.D. Washburn Company. In 1876 he was married to Mrs. Mary E. Smith at Hudson, Wis., and for the past 30 years they have lived in the same house in which he died. Mr. Whitney was a member of the G.A.R. who were represented at the funeral. He was a kind husband and a man of upright character. Although not a member of any church, he was a firm believer in the Christian faith. A widow survives him and three children, Mrs. Grace McKenney, Portland, Oregon, Wilbur E. and Charles M. Smith of Minneapolis. Rev. F.R. Leach conducted the funeral from the house, Tuesday afternoon.
