OBITUARY
THE CHARITON DEMOCRAT
Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, November 10, 1887
DIED - At his residence in Chariton, Friday, Nov. 4, 1887, A. D. Huyck, in the 27th year of his age.
Deceased was taken on Thursday night with a cramp in the stomach suffering severely. He called Dr. Simmons who, to relieve the pain, administered a dose of morphine. This not having the desired effect an additional dose was given.
After a time and finding the patient still suffering the Doctor gave him more morphine by injecting it into his arm, which had the effect of relieving the pain. He sat down with the family at dinner on Friday and seemed cheerful, but complained occasionally of feeling sleepy. After dinner he laid down on the bed and was soon asleep.
As he had been suffering and got very little rest the night before the family did not attempt to disturb him, but someone going into the room noticed him breathing strangely, and when his wife tried to rouse him she found him unconscious. Becoming alarmed she at once summoned medical aid, and despite everything that was done to revive him, the effects of the morphine could not be shaken off, and he died about 6 o'clock in the evening.
He was buried in the Chariton cemetery on Sunday at 3 o'clock, under the auspices of the A.O.U.W., of which he was an honored member.
Mr. Huyck had been connected with the Patriot office some seven years. He was a good workman, a good citizen and was respected by all who knew him. The entire community sympathize with the wife and family in their bereavement.
