John Henkel was the son of John Henkel and Maria Rinke (both born in Germany and who immigrated to the United States in 1881). He married Marion Agnes Duane of Ridgefield Park and they had three children; John Henkel Jr., Marion Henkel and Rosemary McGady. They lived most of their lives in Union City and were members of St. Augustine's R.C. parish. John worked as a printer for the Hudson Dispatch newspaper in Union City. He was also a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus.
