Maria is my paternal great-grandmother.
She was born in Luzzi, Cosenza, Calabria, Italy and settled in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, PA in 1904, coming with her mother, two brothers and sister. She was the oldest child of Francesco Giorno, a successful stonemason who worked on the massive stone wall surrounding the Grey Towers Estate (which became Beaver College now Arcadia University) in Philadelphia, PA and Teresa Frega, who was Albanian.
She was a very talented seamstress, like her mother, and it is said that she could make table clothes, bed spreads, dresses, clothing, and just about anything else. In addition to her native Italian, she could also speak Albanian and a smattering of English (so much for the poor, uneducated Southern Italian!).
