Mrs. J. G. Howes(Hower)
Samantha B. Aley was born at Dayton, Ohio, 1844, & died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jennie Jansen, near Ottawa, KS. She came to Indiana with her parents at the close of the Civil War. She was married to John G. Howes at Logansport, Indiana, & later came to Kansas in 1870, & settled on a homestead 6 miles west of Westmoreland, where they lived for many years enduring all the hardships of a pioneer life.
On account of Mr. Howes's(Hower) failing health moved to Loveland, CO, & later to LA, CA, where Mr. Howes died in 1902. Mrs. Howes has since lived with her children.
She was a member of 8 children, 3 of whom survive her. Mrs. A. Harris of Spokane, Washington, Mrs. F. A. Brown of Onaga & Mrs. A. Jansen of Ottawa, KS.
She has been a lifelong Christian & was always happy in the service of her Master.
She was a member of the United Brethren church for over 60 years & at the time of her death belonged to the First United Brethren church at Spokane, Washington. She also belonged to the Relief Corps at Riverside, California.
She leaves to mourn her departure the remaining children, 15 grand children, 19 great-grandchildren, & 3 great-great-grandchildren, 1 sister, Maria L. Seatt of Logansport, Indiana, & a host of relatives & friends.
The funeral services were conducted at the Jansen home by Rev. E.T. Lucey of the Oakland M.E. church.
A quartet from Ottawa sang the hymns.
Interment was made in the Baxter cemetery near Ottawa, KS.

Sept. 5, 1839, DeGraff, Logan co., Ohio - d. 9 Aug 1902, Santa Monica, California - (son of John 19950775 and Barbary (Garman) Hower 19950751) a civil war veteran who homesteaded six miles west of Westmoreland, Kansas. in the early 1870's.
