John Bell Shatto was the fourth of six children born into a farm family in Perry County, PA. He first appears in his own household as a farmer in the 1870 Perry County Pa. census. Around the time of his first wife's death, he worked as a huckster--a kind of peddler who bought produce and farm products and resold them. In 1879, the family moved to IA where he worked on farms owned by others. (The children from Hannah Moyer's first marriage were sent to live with her parents).

His obituary from a newspaper in the Schaller, IA area provided the following information:

J.B. Shatto, father of Mrs. J.A. Keck, was killed at Schaller on Monday afternoon while hauling manure. In crossing a ditch he was thrown between the horses by the breaking of a crossbar on the spreader and caught in some manure so that he was dragged for a half mile. Whether the horses ran is not known. They were in a brisk walk when caught and Mr. Shatto's life was almost extinct when he was taken from the wagon. The decendent was born in Perry county, Pennsylvania, March 13, 1840, and in 1864 was married to Miss Matilda Camp [sic]. Three children were born to this union, one dying in infancy. A son, William, lives in Wyoming and Mrs. J.A. Keck in this locality. The wife and mother died in 1871 and in 1873 Mr. Shatto was married to Miss Hannah Moyer and eight children was born to this union, six of whom are now living, namely Minnie and Edith, of St. Joseph, Elmer and John, of Kansas City, Anna, of Sabetha, Kansas, and Lottie, of this place. In 1858 he moved to Sac county and later to Kansas. About fifteen years ago he united with the Dunkard church. He leaves one brother, William, living in Pennsylvania, and fourteen grandchildren. The funeral services were held in the Methodist church at Schaller last Tuesday, Rev. E.M. Keeler conducting services, assisted by the Methodist minister, Rev. W.B. Empey. The body was laid to rest in the Cook Center cemetery Tuesday afternoon.

Mrs. Minnie Miller and Mrs. Edith Peery, of St. Joseph, were present at the funeral of their father, J.B. Shatto. Elmer and John Shatto, of Kansas City, sons of the decedent arrived on Wednesday, too late for the funeral.
