He moved his young family to present day Vermont in about 1774 when it was still part of New York, serving as Sergeant in the Vermont Militia in the Revolutionary War under Captains Huntington and Galusha. He marched with Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys and General Benedict Arnold to capture Fort Ticonderoga in 1775. He also participated in both the Battle of Bennington and the Battle of Skenesborough.
