Civil War Union Naval Officer. He was appointed as a Midshipman in the United States Navy on May 1, 1828, and was assigned to the sloop "USS Ontario". Upon his return from sea duty, he served as the Naval School until 1834. That year he was promoted to Passed Midshipman on June 14, and assigned to the Mediterranean Squadron. There he served on the warships "USS Potomac" and "USS John Adams". Promoted to Lieutenant on January 29, 1840, he then commanded the "USS Van Buren" off the coast of Florida, and helmed the ship as it penetrated the Everglades to combat the Seminole Indians in 1842. His next assignments were as commander of the "USS Bainbridge" of the Home Squadron, the "USS Brandywine" in the East Indies Squadron, and at the Philadelphia Naval Yard. When the Mexican War started, he was ordered to the Home Squadron again, and participated in the bombardment and capture of Vera Cruz and Tarpon, Mexico. During the 1850s he again served in the East Indies Squadron, then again in the Mediterranean Squadron (as commander of the "USS Cumberland"), and three years at the Naval Department in Washington, DC. Promoted to Commander on September 14, 1855, He commanded the "USS Memphis" in the 1858 Paraguayan Expedition. When the Civil War started, he was assigned to command the "USS James Adger" in the South Atlantic Blockading Sqaudron, and was promoted to Captain on July 16, 1862. Later assigned to command the sloop "USS Lackawanna" in the Gulf of Mexico, he led the ship in the Battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864, and had a hand in the capture of the Confederate ironclad "CSS Tennessee". After the war he was promoted to Commodore on July 25, 1866, assigned to command the Philadelphia Naval Yard, and was placed on the Retired List on August 27, 1870.
