He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Rfn Holkham was killed when he stopped a suicide bomber in a car who then detonated an explosive device just outside the Sangin Bazaar.
Aged 19, from Chatham. He enlisted at age sixteen and attended the Army Foundation College before completing infantry training at Catterick. Posted to 3 RIFLES in Edinburgh, he took part in training exercises in Kenya and the Falklands, then deployed on his first operational tour in September 2009. As the lead man in his patrol, he found numerous roadside bombs during their six months in Afghanistan and had undoubtedly saved many lives. A commanding officer described him as a selfless and dedicated soldier full of promise. Nicknamed "Snake Eyes" because of his light coloured piercing eyes, he was a lively character and popular among his colleagues.
Rfn Holkham leaves behind his parents Rodney and Tracy, his girlfriend Nikki Rudd, his two brothers Matthew and Andrew who are both serving with 3 RIFLES, grandfather Robin, and other relatives. His grandmother Patricia passed away in February. His family said, "The loss of our son Danny has left a huge hole in our lives and that of his brothers and friends that can never again be filled. He served his country faithfully and with great pride."
Full military funeral was held on St George's Day, April 23, 2010 at All Saints Church, Eastchurch, Kent.
