John Kalbach Valentine was the son of Hosford E. and Annette (Kalbach) Valentine. His father, Hosford Edwin Valentine, served as Mayor of Centerville, Iowa 1897-1898. John graduated from Centerville High School, at Centerville, Iowa, in 1922. He attended the University of Wisconsin and obtained his law degree from the University of Iowa in 1929. In 1929 he entered his father's Law Firm in Centerville. He served as Vice President, General Counsel and Director of the Iowa Southern Utilities Company in Centerville. He was elected Vice President of the company in 1948. In service to his country he spent three years in the United States Navy. His political career was varied. He was elected as the "Kid Senator" from the Appanoose-Davis District in 1933, being only 29 years of age. In the depression ridden sessions of 1933-34-35 Valentine climbed the ladder of political success. He became party leader of the senate. In 1936 John ran for Lieutenant Governor on the Democratic ticket. He was elected along with Governor Nels Kraschel. He was defeated for re-election in 1938 by Bourke B. Hickenlooper. In 1940 he ran for Governor and was defeated by Governor George Wilson. (bio by: Gary Craver)
