Born in N.C. and died in Crockett, Houston County, Texas. Daughter of Colonel John Smith and Anna Jane Pouncey Smith who had come from North Carolina and settled in Houston County, Texas in 1857. Married; Capt. John H. Wootters on Jan. 17, 1867. They had the following children; 1. John Smith m. Sue Craddock 2. Ethel m. Willis Higginbotham of Stephenville, Tx. 3. Lucia W. m. James Harry Painter 4. Frances m. Peyton R. Denman of Lufkin, Tx. 5. Leon Blum m. Jessie Malone Berta was very active in her church work. Belonging to the First Baptist Church of Crockett. Early minutes of the Ladies Aid Society reveal show that she was a most regular attendant, serving in every office, as president more than once and giving consistent financial support to the work. Mrs. Wootters helped organize the D.A. Nunn Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and was its first president.
