Residence Fort Wayne IN. Enlisted on 1/11/1862 as a 1st Lieutenant. On 2/4/1862 he was commissioned into Field & Staff IN 44th Infantry He died of chronic diarrhea on Aug. 9, 1862. Promotions:* 1st Lieut 2/4/1862 (1st Lieut & Quartermaster)

Marcus W Bayless, a member of Staff, recruited man enrolled Feb. 3, 1862 in Calhoun, KY by Col. Reed as Assistant Quarter Master; mustered in next day at age 32.

Notes: Son of Lott Southard and Nancy (Holmes) Bayless and brother to Samuel. Marcus was enumerated in the 1860 Allen Co., IN census with his father.

Mustered in as Quartermaster Sergeant; only served 3 months. Absent sick since May 8, 1862, sent to Cincinnati on board the steamer Lancaster No. 4 May 12, 1862 and received 20 day furlough.

Died at residence of his brother in Allen Co., IN, while on sick leave). Death date of Jun. 9, 1862 also found. Father Lott S. Bayless (also indexed Sot S. Bayless) filed Pension Application #342535 Jul. 22, 1886, in MI.
