Edward J. Deters, son of Anthony and Anna (Koppert) Deters, was born February 16, 1909 in Epiphany, South Dakota. He moved with his family to the Emery area where he grew up. He married Margaret M. Lunders January 2, 1935, in Salem. He farmed near Salem until 1978 when he retired and moved into Salem. After retirement he drove school bus for Salem Public School for several years. He served as a McCook County Commissioner for 12 years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Salem. Ed died on Monday, July 9, 2001 at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, He had reached the age of 92 years, 4 months, and 23 days.
Ed enjoyed fishing, pheasant hunting, reading books, playing cards, and especially his grandchildren. He had a special gift of being able to share stories about his adventures during his lifetime.
Survivors include Margaret, his wife of 66 years, of Salem, three sons, four daughters, 13 grandchildren and 2 great grand children. A brother Joseph of Hartford, South Dakota and a sister Marie Hunt of Bridgewater, South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, two brothers and on son-in-law Primo Simone.
