"I've submitted some edits to this memorial. Unfortunately, Mr. Rickards (who created the memorial) is fairly well known amongst Nevada gravers for the inaccuracy of his memorials. Pretty much everything he wrote in the biography is not true. It's also extremely likely that the photo is not of Mr. Collier. Mr Rickards often used the same photo on several memorials; he seems to have gotten them by photographing "old time" postcard images, as well photos in exhibits and antique stores. It would be great if you could move the current bio to the bottom with a note saying the information in it is inaccurate.
According to his civil war record, Henry Collier was enlisted 15 August 1862 as a Private. He mustered in 11 September 1862 in Illinois to Company B of the 109th Infantry. He mustered out 1 April 1863 and was transferred to Company H of the 11th Infantry. I don't have additional information after that, except that the Veterans Administration master index gives his military date as 14 July 1865.
On 4 January 1875, in Union County, Illinois, he married Nancy Crosby. They are censused together in 1880 in Dayton, Lyon county, Nevada. His occupation is miner.
On 5 August 1886, the Dayton, Nevada, newspaper printed a small article that the case of Nancy Collier versus Henry Collier had been decided in her favor, granting her use of the house, $30 per month in alimony and child support, and $75 for counsel fees.
In 1900 he is censused in Silver City, Lyon county, Nevada, as a quartz miner. In 1902, the Nevada State Journal (Reno, Nevada) mentions that he and Alex. Vaillencore have taken a contract to extend a tunnel in the Rockland mine. On 9 June 1902, he filed for an invalid's civil war pension.
He died in 1919 (death certificate attached to his page). The informant is Effie Pringle, presumably his daughter (although I don't otherwise have a record of her with that surname).
In 1928, Nancy (as Nancy Perkins) filed for a remarried widow's pension. No idea if she got it (or if she was actually eligible, given that she had remarried in 1886 -- to a man even older than Henry; he died two months after Henry did).
All of this information was obtained on Ancestry, Newspapers.com and FamilySearch. If there are any questions you think I might be able to help with, of course feel free to ask.
Thanks for reading.
