Civil War: Company A and D, 1st Maryland Infantry
William Henry Harrison Keene was the son of William George Keene (1813-1887) and Frances Ann Davis. He was 20 years old when he enlisted as a private on May 10, 1861, and mustered into Company A, 1st Maryland Infantry. He was promoted to corporal February 15, 1862, and transferred to Company D. He was reduced to the ranks for an unspecified infraction on August 26, 1862, and appears as a deserter on the regimental return, dated October 12, 1862 (History and Roster of Maryland Volunteers, War of 1861-5, Vol 1. Guggenheimer, Weil & Company, 1898). He later returned to his regiment and was mustered out on March 10, 1863 (Pennsylvania Veterans Burial Cards, 1929-1990; Series No. 1). After the war William married Irish immigrant Jane Mary Graham about 1867 and settled at Verona, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, where he pursued a career as a carpenter.
