Charles Rath, "Frontiersman"
Son of Johann (John) Christian Rath and Philomene Bertha Rath.
1848,his family immigrated to Philadelphia.
1853,Charles ran away from home settling in William Bent's trading Post in Colorado. He worked as an independent freighter hauling supplies and trade goods across Kansas.
1860, Charles Rath took over the trading post of George Peacock on Walnut Creek, near the Great Bend of the Arkansas river, after Peacock and five others were massacred by Kiowa warriors.
He also operated a Sutler's Store at nearby Fort Zarah.
1860,elected Constable of Peketon County.
Charles Rath established trading contacts with the Southern Cheyennes, the Kiowas and Northern Comanche bands. He married a Cheyenne woman named 'Roadmaker'. Their daughter, Cheyenne Belle, was born in August 1861. Because of the many Indian Raids and mounting hostilities, 'Roadmaker' persuaded Charles to leave in 1863, for his own safety.
Late 1860's Charles returned to hauling freight for the military posts along the SANTA FE TRAIL and hunting game for railroad crews building into Kansas.
1869, travelled to Ohio where he met Caroline Markley. They married April 26, 1870. They lived briefly in in Topeka,Kansas. Charles and Caroline moved to Osage City, where Charles opened the Rath Mercantile business and once again began a freighting business. September 1872, moved his family to Dodge City where he began hunting buffalo and marketing the hides, making a substantial profit.
1875, Charles Rath and an associate, Frank E.Conrad, opened a branch store and hideyard on a hill overlooking the Flat at Fort Griffin, in Throckmorton County. They also built a Trading Post on Sweetwater Creek at Mobeetie near Fort Elliott.
1876,established a trading post and hide agency in what is now Stonewall County, Tx/then it was called the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River.
1879/The buffalo supply had diminished and Charles Rath had a 'bone' business for a short time, eventually returning to the freighting business.
1885/Divorce from Caroline, marrying Emma Nesper. Emma and Charles became the parents of Morris Rath, who became a Major League Baseball Player and Sporting Goods Merchant.
**Morris "Morrie" Charles Rath was a
Second & Third Baseman. Morris "Morrie" Charles Rath is buried in
Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill,Penn. He died at the age of 58 by his own hand.
Emma divorced Charles in 1896 and returned to her home in Philidelphia with Morris.
Charles Rath eventually located to Los Angeles to assist his sister and brother-in-law in running a dairy.
