John was born in 1812 to Philip & Polly Harless in Anderson County, TN. Philip was the son of Henry Harless, Sr. and grandson of Johan Philip and Anna Margaretha (Price) Harless, our immigrant ancestors from Offenbach, Germany. They were founding settlers of the area in Blacksburg, VA known as the German New River Settlement.
John married Elizabeth, daughter of William & Nancy (Weaver) Pile, also of Anderson County, about 1837. They had eleven children: Arthur Eugene, William Harrison, Henry Franklin, John D., Mary Jane, Sarah Ann, Louisa, Robert, Rufus S., Nancy E. and Maynard Deorus, who was called "Coarse."
Their first three sons served in the Union Army's 6th TN Infantry, Company F during the Civil War. Either during or just after the War, the family moved from Wallace Crossing (present day Anderson, TN) to Beard Valley Rd. just south of Maynardville in Union County, TN. Arthur, Henry and John moved on to Indian Territory, Oklahoma in the 1880's. The remainder of the children lived in Union and Knox counties until their deaths. Many of their descendants continue to reside in Knox, Union and Anderson counties.
