Charles E. Avery, age 80, of Independence, Kansas passed away Saturday evening, June 8, 2002 at Mercy Hospital, Independence, Kansas.
Charles was born October 21, 1921 in rural Jefferson, Kansas to Elwood and Ruth (McCorkle) Avery. He was reared and attended school in the Jefferson area. On July 29, 1940 at the Springhill Church, Charles married V. Nadine Lloyd. Mrs. Avery survives at the couple's home in Independence. Mr. Avery worked as a greenskeeper for local community golf courses such as the Independence Country Club, Parsons Country Club, Iola Country Club, and the Baxter Springs Country Club. Charles retired from Citizen's National Bank in 1986 and spent his retirement years quietly at home, with his wife of 60 years.
Charles E. Avery is survived by 2 sons, 2 daughters, 1 brother, 5 sisters, 20 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Avery was preceded in death by 1 son, Lee Avery; 2 brothers, Larry and Floyd Avery; and 2 sisters, Iva Bronnenberg and Judy Plumb.
Visitation for Charles Avery will be 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at the Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home Chapel, 306 W. Main, Independence, Kansas.
Funeral services for Charles Avery will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at the First United Methodist Church, 200 S. Penn, Independence, Kansas. Interment will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery, north of Coffeyville, Kansas. Reverend Gary Brooks, pastor of the First United Methodist Church will officiate the services.
The family has suggested memorials to the American Heart Association. Memorials may be left with the personnel at the funeral home.
Casketbearers will be Jared Armstrong, Joseph Armstrong, Josh Armstrong, Ben Avery, Brent Avery, and Ken Driskell.
