Robert Gordon Iler was born to Edward Randolph and Estella Leona McGonagle Iler on June 11, 1919 in Omaha, Neb.
Bob received his early education in Gothenburg, Neb. He became an Eagle Scout, and graduated from Gothenburg High School with the class of 1937.
Immediately after graduating from high school, Bob worked for Potter's Pharmacy in Gothenburg. In 1940 he began his studies at the University of Nebraska College of Pharmacy. In January of 1944 he was commissioned in the US Navy. He had many assignments in the Pacific Theatre enroute to his ultimate wartime post, the hospital ship, the USS Mercy.
He met a young Army nurse, Sophie Madenski from Hadley, Mass. and they were married in September of 1946. Bob and Sophie returned to Nebraska and purchased a drug store and soda fountain in Palmer, Neb. Sophie passed away in June of 1965. In May of 1967 Bob purchased Central Nebraska Drug in Broken Bow, Neb. In June of 1968 he married Neva Bell Boelhke Beck. He retired from full time pharmacy work in 1985 but continued to do relief work during his early retirement years. The Nebraska Pharmacists Association recognized Bob for 50 years of licensed service in May of 1994. Neva Bell died in March of 1994.
Bob was a lifelong Methodist and was a faithful worker for his church. He was a member of the Masons, Scottish Rite and the Shriners.
Bob enjoyed people, serving them in the pharmacy and always making connections. He enjoyed the Huskers, photography, genealogy, and scrapbooking.
In March of 2003 he became a resident of Memorial Health Center in Sidney where he passed away September 11, 2003.
Bob is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Dr. Steven and Margaret Davis of Henderson, Colo., and James and Roberta (Robin) Balthrop of Eufaula, Okla.; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; plus many friends. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Virgil Iler, his sister Gertrude Iler, his wives and an infant daughter, Susan Ann Iler. Services were September 15 at Gothenburg UMC with military honors presented by the Gothenburg Honor Guard at the Gothenburg Cemetery.
