James Pickens Benson, 78, of Columbia, SC, died in a shooting accident at Congaree Hunt Club on July 23, 2007.

Jim was born on July 15, 1929 in Jacksonville, FL, the son of the late Herbert Lankford Benson and Ruth Montgomery Benson. He graduated from Dreher High School and attended the University of South Carolina. He served in the US Army and was a rifle instructor at Fort Jackson. After his honorable discharge he worked in the family business, Benson Oil Company and retired as president in 1986. Recently, he was associated with Russell and Jeffcoat Real Estate. He was the past president of the Evening Optimist Club and was given a life membership in Optimist International for his volunteer work. Jim was the chair of the Roads, Waterways and Trails Committee for Gregg Park. Jim had a lifelong passion for the outdoors and was past president of Pine Tree Creek and Millbrook Hunt Clubs. He also served as vice president of the Denmark Hunt Club. He was the featured outdoorsman in the fresh-water fishing films for South Carolina Educational Television in the early 1960's. An expert marksman, he was a two-time skeet shooting champion of South Carolina. Jim had a great passion for life and was known as a lively story teller among his friends and fellow sportsmen.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Strange Benson; daughters, Ann Palmer Benson and Mary Benson Keenan (William Joseph Keenan, III), both of Columbia, SC, and Elizabeth (Lisa) Frances Benson of Mt. Pleasant, SC; grandsons, William Joseph Keenan, IV and Charles Palmer Keenan, both of Columbia, SC; brothers, Herbert Lankford Bensonm Jr. and William Jerry Benson, both of Columbia, SC; and sister, Mary Benson Brown of Columbia, SC.

His family will miss his enormous wit, infectious laughter, and unique slant on the human condition.
