Raymond Edward Alan Christopher Paley was a brilliant English mathematician who studied first at Eton, then Trinity College at Cambridge. He won a Smith's Prize in 1930 and was elected a fellow of Trinity College.

Paley was killed in an avalanche on Deception Pass near Skoki Lodge in the Canadian Rockies while skiing alone. Witnesses were able to show park wardens where to find his body which was later recovered.
