He was born May 10, 1918, in Springfield, the son of Clyde L. and Esther Thomas Scaife. He married Wilma Buecker on April 11, 1950.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Tim Plunkett; brother, Richard Scaife; and sister, Marjorie Scaife.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma Scaife of Springfield; three daughters, Beverly (Robert) Plunkett of Virginia; Judith (Matthew) Maher of Boise, Idaho; and Melony (James) Paoni of Chatham; a son, Mark William (Cindy) Scaife of Peoria, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
William worked for Allis Chalmers/Fiat Allis as manager of export distribution and supervisor of shipping, retiring after 38 years.
William was a charter member of South Side Christian Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II. He served as supervisor of Woodside Township for many years and was on the Sangamon County Board. He was an American Legion life member, an Eagle Scout and a charter member of 38 club.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at South Side Christian Church, with Pastors Jeff Chitwood and Robert Green officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
