Eben Fine was a business leader, conservationist, mountaineer, photographer and promoter in the city of Boulder. He had moved to Boulder at the age of 21 to work as a pharmacist. A few Fine facts: He helped originate Chautauqua in the late 1890's and served on the board of directors for more than 50 years. He was a charter member and first president of the Rocky Mountain Climbers Club. He photographed Arapahoe Glacier while hiking across it in July 1900. He served as secretary of the Commercial association (precursor of the Chamber of Commerce) and was among those instrumental in building the Hotel Boulderado, which opened on New Year's Eve 1909. He served on the executive committee of Boulder's 1909 Semi-Centennial celebration, inviting 16 Ute Indians to participate as 'Boulder's First Citizens.' He gave his first slide show and lecture in 1905 when his wife Mary suggested they invite friends to hear about their trip to Mexico. She invited 250 people. Eben served as secretary of the chamber from 1927 to 1936. He served as chairman of Boulder's Centennial in 1959.' Eben Fine Park at the western edge of Canyon Boulevard & Arapahoe Avenue 'began as an auto-park, a place for visitors to stop and camp. The park was dedicated in 1959 to his memory.' See his book 'Remembered Yesterdays'. Eben was survived by his step-son Hal Coulson of Boulder and Coulson's son Harry S. Also by nephews John B. Hughes of New York City and Glenn Hughes of Seattle, WA, and nieces Kate Hannon & Lola Welker of Los Angeles, sister-in-law Mrs. Effie Fine of Okmulgee, OK and Mrs. Mary J. Fonda of Boulder.
