Politician and kidnapping victim. President of the secessionist republic of Katanga when Congo became independent of Belgium (1960). Defeated after a bloody civil war, with UN intervention (1963). Returned as President of the Congo 1964, ousted by military coup 1965. Went into exile. Kidnapped 1967. Died in Algeria in 1969.
