In 1761 became a partner with his father and Miles Brewton in the mercantile firm of Smith, Brewton & Smith. His father retired in 1762 and the company continued as Brewton & Smith until 1766. In 1767 joined his cousin Roger Smith and formed Thomas L & Roger Smith. Was part-owner of 3 ships and 1 schooner. Traveled to England in 1769 where he lobbied for the repeal of the Townshend Acts, arranged for the shipment of the statue of William Pitt to Charleston, and procured subscriptions for the bells of St Michaels. Inherited 9000 Stlg from his father and retired from the "Store business" ca 1771. Made the northern tour in 1772, in 1773 obtained a grant for 3000 acres in Craven Co. Owned The Retreat, a plantation on Goose Creek, a town house on Church St in Charleston, 42 slaves, and part-interest in 3 vessels at the time of his death. Was a churchwarden and vestryman at St Michael's (1766-1772) and the same at St Philips (1772-1773). Was elected to several Royal Assemblies. He died as a result of a fall from a horse and was buried in St Philips Churchyard.
