On 24 February 1862, in Charleston, joined the 25 SC Infantry, Eutaw Regiment, Capt Charles H Simonton's Co, Washington Light Infantry [Co A]. He was detailed to the Sharp Shooters on 27 Oct 1862, but was detached for duty as clerk with Bank of Charleston April 13 1863 to May 31 1864. By December of 1864 had returned to his regiment.
Family tradition: he lost a leg during the war, and returned to live with his family, which had refugeed to Rock Hill SC. On one of his children's birthday he fell in front of his house, was unable to get up, and died of exposure.
