Callahan woman dies in crash on birthday
By BRIDGET MURPHY The Times-Union,
A Callahan woman died on her birthday Wednesday after she lost control of her car and swerved into oncoming traffic on U.S. 1 in Nassau County.
A tractor-trailer truck collided with Theresa Michelle Pike's Honda, tearing it in half, Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Bill Leeper said.
Pike, 23, was thrown from the vehicle. She died at the scene.
The 8 a.m. crash happened after Pike, who was driving north, failed to brake in time as a dump truck in front of her slowed to turn left. When she hit the brakes, she swerved right, lost control, then swerved left, crossed the median and went into the southbound lanes, Leeper said.
Pike worked at St. Vincent's Medical Center as a critical care nurse, hospital spokeswoman Pamela Rittenhouse said. Pike had been an employee for about a year and cared for heart patients.
"She was an excellent nurse and she will be sorely missed," nurse manager Sara Dean said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with her family."
Authorities don't know if Pike was wearing a seat belt.
The tractor-trailer driver, Anthony Anderson, 35, of Smyrna, Ga., was wearing his seat belt and wasn't hurt, officials said. He was not cited in the accident.
