He was born in Scotland and married Margaret ALDERSON who was born in England and is probably one of the family from Swaledale who came to the area to mine lead.

Back in 1957, there was a family member who went and interviewed members of our family and then compiled a history of the Horsley family. From this compilation comes this excerpt about John Horsley.

JOHN HORSLEY
John Horsley was born at Isle of Man, England. John came to the U.S. and lived with his parents, William and Mary Horsley at Benton, WI. John was a farmer, a member of the Gem of the Miners Lodge IOOF, Charter member of Sublina Rebekah Lodge of Benton, WI. He was one of the supporters of the Primitive Methodist Church. In 1911 he went to South Dakota and farmed until 1918 when he returned to Cuba City, WI.

JOHN HORSLEY was born in 1851-----1929. He married Margaret Alderson and they had one son name James and two daughters, Mary (Mamie) Isabel, and Roey (Mrs Bert Pierce). Both of the girls lived for some time in the vicinity of Virgil, in Beadle County, South Dakota.
Later they returned to Hazel Green, [Grant County,] Wisconsin and presumably are living there today.

I am thinking that this information belongs to the John Horsley of this memorial. Some of it conflicts a little with what Mark Andrew (#46818298) gave you.

John Horsley

John Horsley was born in England, Mar 21, 1851. [NOTE: Family genealogies have him born on Isle of Man but the 1860 and 1880 U.S. Census clearly makes the distinction that he was born in Scotland. His obituary says he was born in England.] He was the son of William and Mary Bramwell Horsley, and at the age of four years came with his parents to Benton, where he spent the greater part of his life.

He was married to Margaret Alderson, May 13, 1874 who is left with one son and two daughters to mourn his departure. One daughter, Sarah, passed away in early childhood. The surviving children are James, residing on a farm near Benton, Mary Isabell at home and Mrs. Bert Pierce [Pearce], of Hazel Green.

He followed the occupation of farming, retiring in 1904 when he moved to Cuba City. In 1911 he went with his family to South Dakota, again assuming his former occupation for seven years, returning in 1918 to Cuba City where he has since resided.

He was afflicted with pneumonia Saturday, Jan. 21, and quietly passed away Saturday, Jan. 28, after one week’s illness, at the age of 76 years, 10 mos., and 7 days. Besides the immediate family, he leaves to mourn his departure, three brothers and one sister, Hudson
of Murdo, S. Dak.; Bramwell, of Huron, S. Dak.; William, of Esphrata [Ephrata], Wash.; and Mrs. Mickeljohn, also of Wash. Four grand children and seven great grand children, a number of other relatives and friends.

The departed was a loving husband and father, possessing a retiring and unassuming personality, making many friends. All with whom he came in contact mourn his death and feel the loss of a friend.

For many years he was a member of the Gem of the Mines, Lodge, I. O. O. F. and a Charter member of Sublime Rebekah Lodge of Benton and one of the early supporters of the Primitive Methodist Church

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, with a brief service at the home at 1:30 and continued at the Primitive Methodist Church, with Rev. S. S. George pastor of the church officiating. The burial ceremony was in charge of the I. O. O. F. Lodge.

A quartette very beautifully rendered Jesus Lover of My Soul, Rock of Ages, Shall We Meet Beyond the River, and a solo, The Old Rugged Cross.

Four members of the Rebekah Lodge and two immediate friends of the family, carried the many beautiful floral tributes, and six immediate friends carried the remains to its final resting place, where it was interred in the family lot in the P. M. cemetery.
