Mrs. Catherine Bennett, 92, a resident of the county almost 75 years, died in Collingsworth General Hospital at 4:40 a.m. Monday, January 22. She entered the hospital for treatment two weeks ago.
Mrs. Bennett had lived in Thomas Nursing Center several years.
She and her husband, the late W. A. Bennett, came to Collingsworth County from Mill Creek, Oklahoma in 1905 and with his parents and several other families, filed on land in what was to become the Lutie Community.
Sharing her husbands interest, especially in securing improved education for their own and other children, Mrs. Bennett supported him in his work toward organizing the Lutie School, which became one of the of the larger rural schools of the area. Later, they worked for its consolidation into the Samnorwood school system.
With her husband, she was interested in promoting a good quality of farm life for the area. She was also active in Home Demonstration club work, and in Lutie Baptist Church. She had been a Baptist since early in life.
The former Catherine Boone, she was born July 20, 1886, in Van Zant County. She and Mr. Bennett were married Nov. 20, 105 at Mill Creek. He died January 5, 1957.
Survivors are one son, Herbert Bennett of Eagle Butte, SD; three daughters, Mrs. Carrie Boykin of Childress, Mrs. Jimmie Kelso and Mrs. Selba Rainey of Samnorwood. There are 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
