Ralph 'Smokey' F. Carter of Avondale

Ralph "Smokey" F. Carter, 88, longtime resident of Avondale, passed away on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at the Veterans Hospital in Elsmere, Del.

He was the husband of the late Mary L. Carter, who passed away in 2003 and with whom he shared 52 years of marriage.

Born in Ashe County, N.C., he was the son of the late Felix and Della Dolinger Carter.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, 19th Infantry 24th Division in the Pacific Theater, was a Pearl Harbor survivor and a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.

He was an inspector at the NVF Co. in Kennett Square, retiring in 1986 after 40 years of service.

He was a volunteer at the Elsmere Veterans Hospital, the American Legion, and he was a lifetime member and a past post commander of Kennett Square VFW Post 5467. He was also a member of Kennett Masonic Lodge #475, the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Strasburg Sportsman Association.

An avid gardener, he was well-known for his tomatoes.

He is survived by four sons, Walter Carter of Avondale, Scott Carter of West Grove, Barry Carter of Avondale and Bruce Carter of West Grove; one grandson, Sean Carter of Avondale; and four sisters, Mabel Wardell of Newark, Del., Betty and Mary Kilby of Lancaster, and Laura Blevins of Woodbridge, Va.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by two sisters, Grace Paisley and Doris Barr.

Friends may visit with the family from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, March 22, at Cleveland & Grieco Funeral Home, 221-223 Pennsylvania Ave., Avondale, 610-268-2166, followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m.

Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, North Union Street, Kennett Square.

Contributions in Ralph's memory may be made to Volunteer Service at Elsmere VA Hospital, 1601 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805.
