He was a two-time Grammy Award winner with his father, legendary musician and guitarist "Doc" Watson. They earned Grammies for their album "Two Days in November" (1974) in the Ethnic and Traditional Music category and for the Best Country Instrumental Performance for "Big Sandy/Leather Britches" (1979). He was the son of Arthel "Doc" and Rosa Watson, who named him for country music stars, Eddy Arnold and Merle Travis. His mother was the daughter of legendary fiddle and banjo player Gaither W. Carlton. Merle and "Doc" played music and recorded together for fifteen years before his untimely death in a tractor accident on his family farm. Today "Doc" Watson is accompanied by Merle's son, Richard Eddy Watson. "Doc" is the host each spring for MerleFest, a huge concert celebrating traditional American music, held in Wilksboro, North Carolina, in Merle's honor. (bio by: Robert C.
