Born in Holland in 1863, Frank A. Ludewig became a successful architect, designing residences, churches, and restoring historic buildings. Upon immigrating to the United States in 1912, he focused his career on church architecture. In Columbus, Ohio he completed St. Aloysius Church in 1928 (2165 West Broad Street). Through this project, he was invited to submit drawings for the site of the New Josephinum as the institution had outgrown its original location at 18th and Main Street on the Near East side of downtown Columbus. Mr. Ludewig was hired for the project which was completed in the height of The Great Depression in 1931 and is said to the "the finest building Frank Ludewig ever designed." The architecture is Austro-Gothic Revival with a Flemish-Renaissance influence. All the new buildings and chapels were dedicated on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1931.
