Brown was the son of George Newton and Zillah Mae Watson Akeman. He married Eugenia Brown Stidham on March 5, 1913 in Columbia, Boone, MO. Their children were Laura Mae and Exie Lee. Brown and Genie were farmers. They raised livestock (Cattle, mules, horses) and had over 50 head of dairy cows.

--Services Held Sunday for Brown Lee Akeman; Sturgeon Resident-- Funeral services were held Sunday for Brown Lee Akeman, 76 year-old resident of Sturgeon, who died Thursday afternoon at the Audrain hospital where he had been a patient since June 18. The services were held at the Sturgeon Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmie Jones officiating and Rev. William Wade assisting. Mr. Akeman was engaged in farming on a farm north of Centralia for a number of years. He sold his farm in 1949 and moved to Sturgeon. He was a member of the Baptist Church at Sturgeon and the IOOF lodge. He was the son of Newton and Zillah Watson Akeman and was born Feb 2, 1885 in Boone County. He was married Mar. 15, 1913 to Eugenia Brown Stidham who preceded him in death Feb. 23, 1926. survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Laura Mae Kanatzar, Sturgeon, and Mrs. Exie Lee Breedlove, Hallsville; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Shannon Palmer, Columbia and Mrs. W. B. Elley, Hot Springs, S. Dak. and several nieces and nephews. The body remained at the Ballew Funeral Home in Centralia until Saturday noon and was taken to the Ballew Funeral Home in Sturgeon until the hour of the service. Interment was in the Centralia cemetery. Pallbearers were Harold Phillippe, Dewey Roberts, Marshall Esteppe, Morris Powell, Roy Powell and Ray Barnes.
